Law makes some North Carolina officials nervous

Why do some officials want to hide public documents?

Why do some government officials want to hide public records in violation of North Carolina's Sunshine Law? What are they hiding?

During the next several months, we will be trying to learn more about North Carolina's Sunshine Law and talking with local government officials in Greensboro.

The Sunshine Law has received more attention after Elon University earlier this year hosted a conference on open government laws and public access to government records and meetings. The Elon University School of Communications and the North Carolina Open Government Coalition brought together reporters, editors, and executives from around the state to discuss the barriers to open government.

In addition, the Raleigh News & Observer published a series of articles that included examples of government officials trying to keep public records and meeting minutes hidden from taxpayers.

During the next several months, we will be trying to learn more about this important issue. We will report our findings to you our readers.
