Why Northwest Greensboro ?
Published on Tuesday, August 28, 2007
Why did we select Greensboro for an online news website rather than one of the other North Carolina cities where we have lived or worked during the past 16 years (Raleigh, Cary, Fayetteville, Durham, or Winston-Salem)? There is widespread access to the internet in many of the neighborhoods in each of these cities, a key consideration for any online news website.
Is it because our middle son, Ross, recently transferred from NCSU to UNCG to pursue a career in health care? Or is it the "feel of Greensboro" that brought me close to purchasing a house in the Starmount neighborhood in 1997, while I was working as an environmental engineer in Winston-Salem?
Or was the decision, as my wife Sally teases, related primarily to the "caffeine buzz" I acquired while at the Barnes & Noble, located in the Friendly Shopping Center, while she and Ross were "scouting out" the UNCG campus.
I'm really not quite sure. But we are delighted to begin pouring our energies into a modern online news service that is focused on northwest Greensboro and the dynamic neighborhoods that surround the Friendly Shopping Center.
Of course, there will continue to be a demand and need for printed newspapers. Sally and I often sit in bookstores and scan through the various newspapers and magazines on display as we sip our drinks.
However, our two sons in college, Ross at UNCG and Thomas at NCSU, rarely read the newspapers. They surf the internet, share digital images and music with their friends, instant message electronically with girlfriends, and listen to their iPods. Our oldest son, Brent, and his wife, Jamie, both in their early twenties and in the workforce, are thoroughly immersed in the digital age of computers and the internet. My parents, Jane & Harry McKinney, both in their 80s, now use computers and the internet to communicate with family members, follow news events, and write.
Nearly every segment of the modern workforce has been impacted by technology and the internet. For today's workforce, the ability to use computers, software, and internet technology has become increasingly important. For young people now in school, that ability is essential. With all this in mind, and with or without a coffee buzz, www.nwgreensboronews.com happily and proudly rolls into its first full month of internet news service for Northwest Greensboro, North Carolina.
